This Is How Ford's 5

Oct 03, 2023

See what the inside of an engine looks like after 50 runs at 2500 hp - the Ford Mustang engine proves to be robust.

Ford's Coyote engine is one of the more well-known of the modern V8s, going up against the 6.2-liter LT1 engine in the Camaro and making about the same power.

It is relatively-under stressed in the Ford Mustang GT and the motor is capable of more power – thanks to That Racing Channel on YouTube we can see one that has been running 2500 hp for around 50 quarter mile runs and 1000 street miles.

Although the Coyote is a reliable and robust machine, the question is how well has it held up over that time running at such high pressures?

Will the structural integrity have gotten compromised as the team were running it so close to its maximum threshold – they will find out in a detailed break-down of the Coyote in the video below.

In the S550 Ford Mustang, the 5-liter Coyote V8 makes around 450 hp and 410 lb-ft – but the MSRacing team featuring Brett – who is also in the video – were running the unit with turbochargers and some custom parts like a Boss crankshaft, MGP connecting rods, and Manley pistons among others.

After a win at Sick Week 2023, the following weekend there was a light tapping sound under the driver's side valve cover. Brett stopped running the car and luckily, he may have prolonged the life of the engine.

As the team take apart the engine in the video, they comment on how clean it looks and the great condition it's in despite the workload it has been running under; the copper gaskets aren't heat marked like they are usually, and the combustion chambers are clean.

They do find the culprit of the noise though – a broken piece that sits in the head.

Despite the broken part, the rest of the engine has been running perfectly with no other damage to other parts and looks solid. The team continue to comment on how good it looks, and Brett confesses that they have a solid routine that involves warming up the engine before any driving, checking the pressures and temps, plus always running the engine and transmission at the same temps to check consistency, as well as running premium fuel only.

The oil filter got changed every other race or so and the cartridge oil filter got inspected regularly.

It seems that with the combination of the Coyote engine, good maintenance and quality parts, the 5-liter is capable of running 50+ runs at 2500 hp with 48 lbs of boost with no problem and come out looking pretty good.

At the end, the team check the piston sleeves and everything checks out too, meaning the team will be able to upgrade the crankshaft, pistons and rods and turn up the heat even more on this Coyote.
