RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Police Department is investigating after a man was shot and killed while driving, resulting in a crash that occurred in south Richmond this morning.

Around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3, officers were called to the intersection of Richmond Highway and Halifax Avenue for a reported shooting.

8News arrived at the scene to find what appeared to be a crash involving a cement truck. This is the second incident with the Richmond Police Department involving a cement truck to occur in the last 24 hours.

A spokesperson with the department said a man was shot which led him to crash his vehicle into a cement truck traveling in the opposite direction. Police are still investigating to determine if the man was killed by a gunshot wound or the crash. The driver of the cement truck was uninjured.

Richmond Highway was closed in both directions from Harwood Street to Gordon Avenue but has since reopened.

Sources told 8News that investigators consider the death a homicide
